Orchids of South Florida with Dr. Jason Downing - Online Course
Saturday, June 13 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Florida is home to nearly half of the orchid species found in the United States. In South Florida, many tropical orchids have established by blowing over from the Caribbean, Central, and South America and Mexico and include globally endangered species. Through his online course, Fairchild's Orchid Biologist, Dr. Jason Downing will help you in identifying these natives when you are enjoying Florida's great outdoors. He will introduce you to living samples found around the garden, including orchids that are part of the Million Orchid Project. After a tour of Fairchild’s native orchid collection and the orchid micropropagation laboratory you will become a steward of the Million Orchid Project.  


Bromilead Basics: The Biology and Beauty of Tillandsias
Saturday, June 20 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

More than 50% of all bromeliads are epiphytic. Learn about Florida’s native tillandsias and their adaptations to grow in trees. Through a biology lesson and virtual tour at Fairchild you will be able to identify these endangered plants and better understand how they grow in such extreme environments. To highlight the unusual form and structure of tillandsias, participants will learn how to mount and display these plants onto branches, cork, or driftwood for their home.

Painting Nature Step by Step Online Art Class
Four Session Thursday, June 4th – June 25 from 1pm – 3pm 

Join esteemed painter, Andres Lopez for this four-day virtual painting workshop where you will learn how to paint landscapes in oil step by step. From your own home or studio, Andres will show you how to create beautiful artwork while teaching you valuable techniques and principles that will help you grow in the beautiful art of figurative painting. The instruction will focus on one technique at the time and the student will be able to share their progress with the instructor for advice.  

This workshop is designed for all skill levels. 


Virtual Painting the Portrait Intensive: An Alla Prima Approach
Thursdays from June 4th – June 25 (4 – 2 hour Sessions)
10 am – 12 pm 

Share and get creative along with other fellow artists under the guidance of Carlos Gallostra in our virtual online four-day Painting the Portrait intensive. Designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike, this figurative workshop positions the participant to explore Alla Prima – a direct painting approach – aimed to capture an immediate and expressive likeness of the individual in a short amount of time.  

The program fee does not include materials. A list of suggested supplies will be provided.


Virtual Drawing the Portrait Intensive
Tuesdays from June 9th – June 30 (4 – 2 hour Sessions)
10 am – 12 pm 

Let's get your creative juices going! Join other fellow artists under the guidance of Carlos Gallostra in our virtual online four-day Drawing the Portrait intensive. This figurative arts workshop is meant for those who aim to take their skill sets in drawing farther and wish to capture the visual essence of the individual. Using your own photo reference as the muse and in the comfort of your home studio, you will learn how to effectively develop your own graphite or charcoal and chalk portrait through tailored mentoring and critiquing.

How can you grow pizza sauce? You start with tomatoes! There are some challenges to growing tomatoes in the summer in south Florida, so join us as we explore growing stategies, fun ways to start your tomatoes, and maybe even use up some of those toilet paper rolls! We'll also cover some other tasty favorties, like eggplant and bell peppers.


Plant a Pizza Party: Flavor Thyme

Herb gardening is a fun, summer friendly way to grow plants, even if you have limited space! Find ways to add a quick pop of flavor to any favorite dish....but especially pizza! Some of these amazing herbs you can even grow from leftover scraps!


These classes will be taught online using ZOOM (, a FREE online video conferencing platform. All you need is a computer, internet access, a webcam, and a microphone. Details and login information will be sent prior to the class.
